SLOVAKIA does not consider the March 16 referendum in Crimea to be valid and as such does not recognise it. At the same time, the Slovak Foreign Ministry called on Russia to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and to refrain from any steps that would further escalate tension in that country, the ministry wrote in an official statement.
“We believe that renewing the political dialogue between Kiev and Moscow can help find a way to solve the crisis,” the ministry wrote in the statement.
Speaking along the same lines as its EU partners, Slovakia’s ministry called the referendum illegal and illegitimate, since it was carried out in conflict with the Ukrainian Constitution and under the threat of Russian military intervention.
In Crimea, over 83 percent of the voters participated in the referendum, with almost 97 percent of them agreeing that Crimea should break away from Ukraine and join Russia.
