Slovakia has until the end of the year to send its response to the European Commission's reasoned opinion questioning the procedures for selection of the contractor for the country’s electronic toll collection system, the SITA newswire wrote.
Initially, Slovakia should have replied within a two-month deadline by the end of November but it asked the EC to extend the deadline.
The EU executive body agreed to extend the deadline until January 1, 2011, according to Lukáš Lučenič of the PR department at the Slovak Transport Ministry. Technical talks involving the EC, representatives of the Transport Ministry and the National Highway Company are underway, she added.
Transport Minister Ján Figeľ will defend Slovakia's interests regarding the awarded contract for the e-toll system, SITA wrote.
"I intend to fend for the interests of Slovakia consistently," the minister declared following the meeting with the EC Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier, in late September. The EC stated its reservations regarding the awarded contract for the e-toll system at that meeting.
