While the European Union has been incurring ecological debt since May 10 this year, Slovakia began to live with the same debt on May 22.

“We make use of resources faster than nature can restore them and thus, we harm ourselves,” said Miroslava Plassmann, the head of the World Wide Fund (WWF) Slovakia, as quoted in a press release.

Slovakia is predominantly struggling with the production of carbon dioxide coming from fossil fuels, intense farming and deforestation. Slovakia's Overshoot Day, calculated by Global Footprint Network, fell on May 27 last year, but it came earlier in 2019.

Therefore, Slovakia's current Overshoot Day suggests that Slovaks need 2.6 planets to satisfy their needs.

Yet, Russia and the USA have been living in ecological debt for weeks now.

The global Earth Overshoot Day of 2019 is to be announced by the Global Footprint Network on June 5.
