Slovakia is still holding talks with potential buyers of its unused CO2 emission quotas (AAU), with Spain and Austria in the running, the TASR newswire was told by Environment Ministry spokesman Maroš Stano on Monday, January 28.
"The contract terms are being fine-tuned, so that they will be as advantageous for Slovakia as possible," said Stano. The government gave its consent to the ministry at the end of November to sell the quotas. There are two possibilities: either to sell 27 million tonnes of AAU to Spain, or 22 million tonnes to Spain and the rest to Austria. Slovakia last sold its emission quotas in 2008 during the first government of Robert Fico. The sale resulted in a scandal, however, as the ministry sold the quotas to Interblue Group for a suspiciously low price.
