Slovakia in tight spot between EU and US

Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan has said Slovakia will delay its answer to a US request that its citizens be immune to prosecution by the International Criminal Court, and will wait until the EU releases an official position on the issue at the end of the month.

Romania has already agreed to a bilateral treaty with the US giving Americans exemption from ICC prosecution, apparently in the hope of receiving US support for Romania’s bid to enter Nato at an integration summit this November in Prague. Slovakia also hopes to receive an invitation to join the Alliance.

The US insists its citizens not be subject to prosecution by the Hague court because of the danger of politically-motivated trials of US soldiers by hostile powers.
