SLOVAKIA is below average in terms of water and sewer mains connections to domestic households, according to data from the EU's statistics bureau, Eurostat.

Only 84 percent of Slovak households were connected to the public water system in 2003, putting Slovakia near the bottom of the EU charts and ahead of only Estonia (72 percent) and Lithuania (76 percent), the SITA news agency wrote.

Slovakia also lags behind in sewer system connections. According to Eurostat, 45 percent of Slovaks are not connected to the public sewer system, better only than Cyprus, where 65 percent of inhabitants live without a sewer connection.

In the EU, an average of 90 percent of the population is connected to urban wastewater collection systems.
