Slovakia lives a World Cup-dream in South Africa – defeats Italy 3-2

The Slovak national football team advanced to the World Cup round of 16, after beating the 2006 World Cup champions, Italy, in the last match of Group F.

The Slovak national football team advanced to the World Cup round of 16, after beating the 2006 World Cup champions, Italy, in the last match of Group F.

Two Slovak goals were scored by Robert Vittek and one by Kamil Kopunek. Antonio Di Natale and Fabio Quagliarella scored for Italy. In the F-group final rankings the Slovak team ended up second, advancing to the next phase of the tournament together with the group winner, Paraguay.

The Italian team fizzled out in South Africa ending up in the last place in the group with even New Zealand notching up a better position, though also not advancing.

Game Summary: Slovakia - Italy 3:2 (1:0); Scorers: Vittek (25., 73.), Kopunek (89.) - Di Natale (81.), Quagliarella (90.+2).
