THE SLOVAK men's tennis team lost narrowly to Croatia in the final of the Davis Cup competition on December 4. The Slovaks went down 2:3, the daily Hospodárske noviny reported.

Even Dominik Hrbatý’s surprising victory over Croatian Ivan Ljubicic was not enough to give Slovakia an historic victory. Mario Ancic gained the third decisive rubber for Croatia in the final singles match against Michal Mertiňák.

Ancic held his nerve to beat Mertiňák 7-6 6-3 6-4 and clinch a famous victory, sparking wild celebrations from the travelling Croats in the Sibamac Arena.

"When I lost, I really never doubted that Mario would beat Mertiňák," said Ljubicic.

Ancic won each doubles rubber in Croatia's march to their first title with Ljubicic, but his record in singles had been a cause for concern.
