THE NUMBER of traditional tourists to Slovakia – those from the Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany - is falling. The estimated decrease compared to last year is 10 percent to 15 percent.
Even the growing number of tourists from countries farther abroad cannot compensate for this drop. The daily SME wrote that unfavourable numbers were caused not only by the strong crown but also by growing Polish competition.
Polish state assistance helped hotels to increase their quality without price hikes. Poland also encourages its citizens to spend their holidays in their country. Companies can support employees’ holidays at home by Sk7,000 (€174) a year.
While the strengthening Slovak crown makes a holiday in Slovakia even more expensive, the Polish zloty is gradually weakening. Slovakia has also greatly delayed promoting itself as a vacation spot.
