MORE than half of Slovaks would rather come from a different country, says a survey conducted by the MVK polling agency for the daily SME. Countries preferred to Slovakia include the USA, Switzerland, Australia and the Czech Republic. A few respondents even listed Russia as the country of choice.
Just 44 percent of respondents said they were happy to be born in Slovakia. Pensioners, the unemployed and supporters of the SMK (the Hungarian Coalition Party) registered as the least happy. KDH (Christian Democratic Movement) and KSS (Communist Party) supporters, along with professional managers, are the happiest to be Slovak.
Sociologist Ján Buncák says that Slovaks are envious and have a poor self image.
"Americans, for example, are convinced that they are the most democratic nation on earth. However, Slovaks lacked independence for a long time, and their self-perception is rather defensive in nature," he said.
