Slovakia presented a report on observance of human rights in the country in Geneva, Switzerland on May 13 as part of a general evaluation by the UN Council for Human Rights, the TASR newswire was told by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Ján Škoda.
All member countries of the UN go through this process. The Slovak delegation in Geneva was headed by the ministry's State Secretary Diana Štrofová. A dialogue followed the presentation of the report.
The discussion focused mainly on the application of anti-discrimination legislation in Slovakia with a special emphasis on the situation regarding the country's Roma minority. Several participating national delegations specifically praised the presentation delivered by Slovakia's Proxy for the Roma Communities Anina Botošová, reported TASR.
Issues such as gender equality, women's and children's rights, racist violence and the inappropriate use of police power were also discussed. The participating countries were also interested in the ratification of international tools in Slovakia.
Before the report is officially accepted by the Council in September, Slovakia will have an opportunity to react to individual recommendations made by country representatives at the meeting. TASR
