The police inspectorate, under the Interior Ministry led by Hlas party chair Matúš Šutaj Eštok, has levelled charges of abuse of power against four people.
Among those accused is Michal Šúrek, a former prosecutor from the now-cancelled anti-corruption Special Prosecutor’s Office. Following a decision by General Prosecutor Maroš Žilinka, Prosecutor Šúrek has been reassigned to the non-criminal, prison section of the General Prosecutor’s Office.
Robert Fico’s fourth government has accused the defunct anti-corruption bureau, which investigated and contributed to the convictions of several individuals from the eras of the previous Smer-led administrations, of human rights violations and frequently attacked the prosecutors of this institution.
Still, Prosecutor Šúrek remains at the helm of handling several crucial criminal cases. Among them is the second corruption case involving convicted former special prosecutor Dušan Kováčik. This case is nearing its conclusion at the first-instance court. Šúrek is also spearheading the ‘Očistec’ (purgatory) case, probing alleged police abuses under the previous Smer-led governments. Notably, one of the accused is Smer MP and deputy speaker of parliament Tibor Gašpar, who served as police chief during some of those Smer-led administrations. The indictment also targets Kováčik, oligarch Norbert Bödör, and former National Crime Agency (NAKA) officials. This case has been formally filed in court - back in 2021.
