SLOVAKIA officially recognised Montenegro as an independent state on June 13, one day after the EU did so.
"In line with international practices and based on the results of a democratic referendum, Slovakia recognises the independent and sovereign state of Montenegro along with all the rights and obligations that ensue from this," the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry stated. In the near future, Slovakia plans to establish diplomatic ties with the new republic.
The Montenegrin parliament declared independence from Serbia, with which Montenegro had been joined in a loose union, on June 3, the TASR news agency wrote.
"Slovakia is ready to develop relations with the republics of both Montenegro and Serbia in all areas of common interest, based on friendship and mutually beneficial cooperation," the ministry stated.
