SLOVAKIA officially recognised Montenegro as an independent state on June 13, one day after the EU did so.

"In line with international practices and based on the results of a democratic referendum, Slovakia recognises an independent and sovereign Montenegro along with all the rights and obligations arising from this," stated the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In the near future, Slovakia will also establish diplomatic ties to the newly formed republic. On June 3, the Montenegrin parliament declared its independence from Serbia, with which Montenegro had been joined in a loose union, TASR wrote.

"Slovakia is ready to develop relations with both the republics of Montenegro and Serbia in all areas of common interest, based on friendship and mutually beneficial co-operation," the ministry stated.
