IN THE last 25 years of HIV monitoring in Slovakia, 339 cases of HIV-positive people were recorded, with 20 cases being added to the statistics in 2010. Clinical symptoms of AIDS developed in 57 of those infected and 37 people died of AIDS in Slovakia.
The unofficial numbers, however, are estimated to be much higher than the official statistics recorded in the report on the national HIV/AIDS prevention programme discussed by the cabinet at its February 16 session.
According to the official report, the majority of those infected are men, and most are city dwellers. Bratislava Region recorded the highest number of infections, the SITA newswire reported.
Treatment for HIV-positive patients is available in Bratislava, Banská Bystrica and Košice. HIV testing is carried out by the National Reference Centre for HIV/AIDS Prevention.
