Slovakia saw the sharpest year-on-year drop in road fatalities from among 30 European countries in 2009, according to a report released by the European Transport Safety Council on Tuesday, June 22.
Slovakia recorded a 36-percent drop (from 606 deaths in 2008 to 385 in 2009), followed by Lithuania, Denmark and Estonia (26, 25 and 24 percent, respectively.) By contrast, Malta and Luxembourg recorded the most significant increases in road deaths (40 and 34 percent, respectively). The average drop in the 30 countries was 11 percent, the TASR newswire wrote. There were 71 road deaths per million people in Slovakia last year, which is close to the European average (70 per million).
