Of all European Union countries, Slovakia posted the fifth-highest general government deficit last year, according to data from the Economy Ministry's Institute of Financial Policy (IFP).
In 2006, Slovakia reported a deficit of 3.4 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Only four EU member states posted a worse result: Hungary with a deficit of 9.2 percent of GDP, Italy with 4.4 percent, and Poland and Portugal with 3.9 percent each.
The Czech Republic's deficit was sixth-highest with 2.9 percent of GDP.
