Slovakia is the country with the highest number of long-term unemployed, i.e. people who have been jobless for more than 12 months, among the EU member states. The number of long-term jobless has reached as much as 67.8 percent, the TASR newswire reported on August 5.
“In no other [EU] country did the proportion of people who are unemployed long term top 60 percent,” said Eva Sadovská, analyst with Poštová Banka, as quoted by TASR.
The country with the second highest number of long-term jobless is Ireland with 59.4 percent, followed by Estonia with 56.8 percent.
Moreover, three of Slovakia’s four large regional units, i.e. the Bratislava region, western, central and eastern Slovakia, finished among the ten worst regions for long-term unemployment in Europe. Western Slovakia with its ratio of 71.1 percent finished fourth, followed closely by eastern Slovakia, which reported 71 percent, Sadovská added.
The only regions that reported higher jobless rates than Slovakia were France’s overseas regions of Guadeloupe, French Guiana and Martinique, TASR wrote.
