Slovakia says farewell to the World Cup after loss to the Netherlands

Slovakia's national football team on Monday, June 28, lost to the Netherlands 1:2 in the round of 16 at the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was eliminated from the tournament, the TASR newswire wrote. Dutch star Arjen Robben scored in the 18th minute, with his teammate Wesley Sneijder making it 2:0 in the 84th minute. Slovakia's striker Robert Vittek narrowed the lead with a last-minute penalty shot.

“I believe that the better team won today... It was a demanding match, but we have nothing be ashamed of,” said Vladimír Weiss, the coach of Slovakia's team.

“We missed (defender) Zdeno Štrba, particularly in the early stages of the match, but we improved over time and had two clear chances. Perhaps we could have achieved more but by and large I'm satisfied,” he added.
