SLOVAKIA is to send 2,200 tonnes of old armaments and ammunition to Afghanistan, the cabinet decided. The export is as a way for Slovakia to get rid of outdated armaments, which it would have to get rid of anyway, the daily SME reported.

Slovak Defence Minister Juraj Liška said the shipment was a gift that should help in "building the Afghan national army". The US will pay the export costs for the arms shipment.

Security analyst Ivo Samson of the Slovak Foreign Policy Association, said, however, that he was not sure whether "the Afghan armed forces are under such control that it can be excluded that the arms will not get into the wrong hands".

Other analysts confirmed the risk.
