Slovakia has kept its top position in the number of cars produced per citizen – about 171 per capita. This year, carmakers in Slovakia are expected to produce 930,000 cars.
The study elaborated by the University of Economics in Bratislava on the request of the Association of Automotive Industry of Slovakia (ZAP) implies that last year, more than 926,000 cars in total were produced in the country which means an increase year-on-year of nearly 45 percent.
ZAP head Jaroslav Holeček opined at the November 27 press conference, as quoted by the SITA newswire, that the local car industry should focus mainly on the development of subcontractors, so that as few as possible parts need to be imported in Slovakia.
The study entitled “Macroeconomic Importance of Automotive Industry in Slovakia” further states that this industry has the third highest added value per one employee, €75,000.
“The automotive industry which generates 26 percent of total export and also 20 percent of total import, crucially contributed to the positive trade balance of Slovakia,” Mikuláš Luptáčik, head of the study, added as quoted by SITA. “It improved the trade balance by €4.5 billion.”
“The figure for 2013 is coming close to 1,000,000, which brings us to the maximum capacity of our producers,” ZAP’s Holeček said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. More than 60,000 people work in the automotive industry in Slovakia, with another 140,000 jobs provided by suppliers and sub-suppliers. In total, this represents 9 percent of the entire Slovak workforce.
When it comes to 2012, the output generated by car plants in Slovakia during that year was at €29.68 billion, with direct production accounting for more than €20 billion of the total. This was an increase of close to €4 billion on an annual basis.
