FOREIGN Affairs Minister Eduard Kukan is convinced that in October the UN General Assembly will choose Slovakia as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2006-7.
The votes of at least two-thirds of the 191 UN member states are needed for a country to be elected to the Security Council. Slovakia is the only candidate of the Eastern European group of countries, for which one place in the Council is reserved, the news wire TASR wrote.
Kukan says that when Slovakia becomes a member of the Security Council, it would focus on issues related to the future of Kosovo, as well as the development of the whole of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
"This is where we wish to play a key role," Kukan said at a news conference on August 31.
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovic plans to attend the upcoming UN General Assembly in September to help promote Slovakia as Security Council candidate.
