ON SEPTEMBER 25, Slovakia took the best-of-five tie in its Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina in four, with Dominik Hrbatý defeating Guillermo Coria 7-5 (2) 6-2 6-3 in just over two hours, the TASR news agency reported.
The victory lifts Slovakia to its first Davis Cup final. Likewise, Croatia, which beat Russia also 3-1, will be playing for the first time in the top national team competition. Slovakia will have home-court advantage in the early-December final.
Hrbatý, who is ranked 19th, 11 places below Coria on the ATP rankings, had the clay court specialist scrambling behind the baseline for much of the match with punishing, corner-to-corner ground strokes. Hrbatý has now won three of his four matches against Coria.
