Slovakia will open an embassy in Chisinau, Moldova, in the first half of 2013, the TASR newswire reported, citing comments made at a press conference given by Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák and his Moldovan counterpart Iurie Leanca in Bratislava on Thursday, November 8.
According to Lajčák, the decision to open a separate embassy is due to the fact that Slovakia's co-operation with Moldova has reached such intensity that Slovakia has began to view as problematic the fact that it has no representation in the country. Upon the opening of the embassy, an initial session of a joint intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation and a business forum will be held.
Lajčák noted that as far as the process of coming closer to the European Union goes Moldova is the leader of the Eastern Partnership countries.
Leanca noted that the two countries have been engaged in a highly constructive dialogue regarding bilateral issues and expressed Moldova's commitment to maintain it. He went on to thank the Slovak government for its decision to open an embassy in Moldova. According to Leanca, Moldova is grateful to Slovakia for the support it has lent Moldova on its path towards European integration.
