Slovakia will become a new temporary home for 46 Afghan refugees from Iran who arrived in the country on May 23, based on a December 2010 agreement between the Slovak government, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the SITA newswire reported.
According to SITA, a group of women and children landed at the Košice airport. The oldest woman is 55 years old and the youngest member of the group is a seven-month-old baby. They will be accommodated in the Interior Ministry' asylum facility in Humenné where they can stay for six months. After this period, they will be resettled to other countries.
