THE SLOVAK government has agreed to spend over €1.4 million on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of HIV and AIDS, according to the National HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme in the Slovak Republic for 2013-2016.
Some €1.16 million of the sum is to be allotted for treatment of those who suffer from the disease, the TASR newswire reported.
There have been 483 cases of HIV infection recorded in Slovakia between 1985 and September 27, 2013, with 414 out of them being men and 69 women. Of those, 70 have developed AIDS and 49 have died.
“Most HIV infections in Slovakia have been recorded in the group of men having sex with men,” the report reads, as quoted by TASR.
The Health Ministry also outlined its plans to prevent the spread of HIV in the coming years, including dissemination of information through the media, support from help lines and consultancy offices, and educational programmes focused on young people.
