Talks between the Slovak parliament’s foreign affairs committee members and its Hungarian counterpart in Esztergom, Hungary, on February 25 focused on minorities and the institutionalisation of the Forum of MPs of the Carpathian Basin (FPKK) in the Hungarian Parliament.
Slovak committee chairman Boris Zala (Smer) told the TASR newswire that on the issue of the FPKK’s institutionalisation, the Slovak and Hungarian sides agreed that the subject should be turned over to legal experts.
“We will submit a legal analysis of what we view as a violation of international law to the Hungarian side. This topic should be subject to our further negotiation,” Zala said. Zala's Hungarian counterpart Zsolt Németh said that, so far, the stances of the two sides have differed on the issue.
“Our assessment from the legal perspective is different. Slovakia feels that the FPKK has an extra-territorial effect, while in our opinion the forum does not. We regard the resolution of the Slovak parliament as an intervention into the internal affairs of the Hungarian parliament,” Neméth said. He also stated that the Slovak side had no objection against the forum as such, but rather against its institutionalisation within the Hungarian National Assembly. TASR
