SLOVAKIA will take the European Commission (EC) to court to demand higher carbon dioxide emissions quotas. On Wednesday, the cabinet gave the Slovak justice minister the responsibility of filing a complaint concerning the invalidity of the EC's decision on the allocation of emissions quotas for the period 2008-2012.
Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that reducing CO2 emissions by over 10 million tons to 30.9 million per year would cause great difficulties to Slovakia's economy. According to Fico, the EC did not take into account Slovakia's current high economic growth and the shutdown of two reactors of the Jaslovské Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant.
According to the Slovak Environment Minister, Jaroslav Izák, Slovakia will demand the originally allocated emission quotas.
The Pravda daily reported that Germany also plans to take legal action against the EC over emission quotas.
