The Slovak cabinet in the end did not have on its agenda for the session extraordinarily convened on Tuesday, rather than its usual Wednesday, the announced draft amendment to the state Slovakia’s citizenship law being considered in response to possible action by the Hungarian parliament, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovakia’s ministers were gathered because the Hungarian Parliament may soon pass legislation under which Slovakia’s ethnic Hungarians could be granted dual Hungarian citizenship, despite massive protests made by the Slovak government in Bratislava.
A revision in Slovakia’s citizenship law, which was to be on the agenda of the cabinet, was thought to have been drafted as a countermeasure to Hungary's revision of its citizenship law which would allow ethnic Hungarians in neighbouring countries to apply for Hungarian citizenship without having permanent residence in Hungary.
The revision of Hungary’s dual citizenship law was one of the first points on the agenda of the new Hungarian Parliament, in which the Fidesz party won a two-thirds majority after recent national elections. The Slovak cabinet also did not talk about expedited legislative procedure for its draft.
