Slovakia’s chances good for UN post

Slovakia would receive a boost in diplomatic prestige if it obtains non-permanent membership for Slovak President Ivan Gašparoviè to the United Nations Security Council for 2006-7, the daily SME wrote.

Eastern European nations have a right to elect one spokesman to the UN Security Council. Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Romania have already held the post, improving Slovakia’s chances to fill the role.
According to political analysts, non-permanent membership benefits are limited to political capital.
