Slovakia's Supreme Court chairman will continue to be elected by the country’s Judicial Council and not by Parliament, since Slovak MPs on Wednesday, September 9, did not pass to a second reading a proposal to amend the Slovak Constitution submitted by a group of independent MPs led by the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia (KDS) around MP Vladimír Palko, the TASR newswire wrote.
This constitutional change would have made the election of the Supreme Court chairman a responsibility of Parliament rather than the Judicial Council, as is now the case, the TASR wrote. The proposal needed the support of at least 90 MPs to be successful. According to them, the Judicial Council "was not worthy of electing the Supreme Court chairman". TASR
