Journalists from the private television channel Markíza are complaining about interference in their work for the benefit of the Smer-led government after the arrival of the new Markíza head.

The tension escalated to such an extent that they sent a letter to the general director, Peter Gažík, at the end of February and requested a solution to their situation. The letter was signed by the vast majority of reporters and presenters, including people from Markíza’s regional TV crews.

On Thursday morning, journalists met Gažík to discuss things.

The situation at the network became tense after the long-time news director, Henrich Krejča, was replaced by Michal Kratochvíl from the private Czech television Nova in December.

“With the arrival of the news director (...) Michal Kratochvíl, procedures, which are incompatible with the internal editorial guidelines of CME [Markíza’s owner] and Markíza, began to be introduced in the editorial processes,” reads the letter.
