The military forces of Slovakia and Great Britain were the main topic of talks between Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his British counterpart Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street in London on Tuesday, November 17, the SITA newswire wrote.
“Slovakia is a very important partner in the coalition of 43 countries and I would like to thank the Prime Minister for his decision to raise the number of soldiers in Afghanistan,” said the British Prime Minister. He thinks that NATO and EU allies can supervise some areas only together.
According to Slovakia's Prime Minister, the Slovak government sees a major difference between the mission of soldiers in Iraq and in Afghanistan, which is why his cabinet withdrew forces from Iraq immediately after he took up the post of prime minister.
The Prime Minister told SITA that Slovakia is ready to change the mandate of Slovakia's forces so that they can serve also in regions other than Kabul and Kandahar. Fico is happy that there are no open issues in the relations between Slovakia and Great Britain.
The extraordinary relations between the countries are reflected in the fact that PM Fico is paying an official visit to Great Britain on the day of Slovakia's public holiday. He reminded the British PM that 170,000 Slovaks study and work in Great Britain but that Britain ranks only 5th or 6th on the charts of investors in Slovakia. SITA
