Slovakia's schools are labouring under an almost 600 million crown debt, Slovak Education Minister Milan Ftacnik told journalists on June 7.
The most critical situations are in the Košice and Prešov regions (eastern Slovakia), where school debts have climbed as high as near 170 million crowns. The Education Ministry will come up with savings measures in the sector by the end of 1999, which may include merging some schools in regions.
