The unemployment rate in Slovakia reached 10.92 percent in April, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre announced on May 19.
The figure represents a month-on-month (m-o-m) increase of 0.59 percentage points and a year-on-year (y-o-y) rise of 3.54 percentage points. The number of officially-registered job seekers reached 289,340 in April, rising by 15,561 m-o-m, and by 96,822 y-o-y.
Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSaR) director Ján Sihelský said at a press conference on the same day that the situation in the Slovak employment market is slowly stabilising. He pointed out that growth in unemployment slowed in April. Although the figure of 10.92 percent represents a month-on-month increase of 0.59 percentage points and a year-on-year rise of 3.54 percentage points, this growth was the lowest since the beginning of 2009, the TASR wrote.
Sihelský said that Slovakia currently has the seventh-highest unemployment rate in the European Union. “It's good to view the situation in Slovakia in the context of the European employment market. There's nothing special happening on the Slovak market that would force us to panic about it not being functional,” he added. TASR
