The figure was still the second highest monthly rate since March 2005, just below July of this year. On an annual basis, the jobless rate in Slovakia increased 4.69 percentage points in August.

The jobless rate had been growing since October 2008, when labour offices reported a rise from September 2008 of 0.03 percentage points to 7.51 percent, the SITA newswire wrote. The number of jobless had been growing each month since then under the influence of the economic crisis, which has had a significant effect on Slovakia's export-dependent economy.
