A RECORD number of citizens of the eastern-Slovak town of Prešov gave their support to cancer research when 1,130 of them ran in the national charity programme called Run for Life on June 20, almost three times the number of runners last year.
By paying their entrance fee, they raised €3,433 for this good cause.
The event was under the sponsorship of Prešov mayor Pavol Hagyari and the patron of the run, Prešov actor Michal Hudák, arrived personally to support these fans in their healthy lifestyle.
“I am happy to come and get a chance to be a part of such a great atmosphere. I really enjoyed the run together with my daughter and son,” he told the TASR newswire.
The Run for Life is one of the biggest charity projects in Slovakia, taking place in Nitra, Bratislava, Prešov and Žilina. In the cities of Nitra and Bratislava, record numbers of runners also participated.
This fundraising activity was organised for the second consecutive year by Tesco and the Foundation for Cancer Research.
From the funds collected, the Institute of Experimental Oncology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences will be able to buy a top-notch diagnosis device which can warn in advance of a potentially cancerous tumour.
Tesco will make an additional donation of 10 percent over the amount raised by all the runners in the Run for Life event, the retail chain promised.
