MAY 1 in Slovakia saw some people celebrating the country's EU entry and others marking international Labour Day.
In Bratislava, the Slovak Cabinet Office was open to the public in celebration of Slovakia's entry into the EU, exactly one year previously. About 400 people turned up to mark the occasion, the daily SME reported.
Top Slovak officials, including Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda, welcomed the visitors.
At the same time, the workers' anthem, The Internationale, sounded on Bratislava's SNP Square to mark international Labour Day.
Representatives of the labour unions and the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) made speeches criticizing the current cabinet. The KSS organized protest meetings across the country. Few people attended these meetings, largely pensioners.
