The Slovenská Sporiteľňa bank, Slovakia’s largest retail banking house, recorded a net profit of Sk338 million ($7.1 million - IAS) in the first quarter of 2002, half the figure achieved in the same period last year. Bank officials blamed the drop on higher payments to the Deposit Protection Fund that protects bank clients from bank crashes.
