THE OPPOSITION Smer party accused José Manuel Barroso, the chairman of the European Commission (EC) who is on a two-day visit to Slovakia, of political interference ahead of the country's June general elections.
Smer was outraged that Barroso praised the reforms of the current right-wing government of Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda and called for them to be continued after the next elections
According to Smer, such statements are "an unacceptable interference into the election campaign" in Slovakia, the SME daily wrote.
Fico said that Barroso cannot say that he does not want to interfere into local politics on the one hand and simultaneously defend the right-wing reforms on the other.
Fico insisted that Barroso as an EC official should avoid political promotion and "dictating to Slovaks that they follow the path of harmful right-wing experiments".
