Smer leading polls

HAD parliamentary elections been held in the first half of March, Smer would have won the elections with voter support of 30.3 percent, a new poll showed.

The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia would rank second with 13.1 percent and the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union would be third with 11.9 percent.

The Hungarian Coalition Party gained 10.5 percent and the Christian Democratic Movement was next with 9.6 percent, according to a poll conducted March 8-14 by Slovak Radio's Department of Media Research on a sample of 3,124 respondents.

Of the non-parliamentary parties, only the nationalist Slovak National Party reached the 5 percent mark needed to enter parliament, gaining 8.5 percent. The New Citizen's Alliance scored 5.5 percent.
