Flašiková Beňová said on March 17 that it is irresponsible not to recognise the Crimea referendum.

"Ms Flašíková is disgracing Slovakia by making these statements, because as number two on the slate for the European elections she can't express views that run contrary to the entire government, but also the opposition,” Frešo said, as quoted by TASR, adding that the EU rejected the results of the referendum, so it's shocking when a long-term MEP says she respects the results.

At the same time, SDKÚ vice-chairman Ivan Štefanec, who tops the party’s slate for the EP elections, called Flašíková’s statements scandalous, given the fact that the EU foreign affairs minister, including Slovakia’s Miroslav Lajčák, are united in their rejection of the referendum in Crimea.

“I'm convinced that she should apologise to Slovak citizens for these outrageous statements," said Štefanec, as quoted by TASR.
