Parliament, at its session on Tuesday, December 8, rejected a request from the General Prosecutor’s Office to lift the immunity of Smer party MP Ján K. so that he can face criminal prosecution for allegedly using violence in an attempt to recover a debt.
A total of 49 legislators voted to strip the MP of his immunity, while 63 were against, nine MPs abstained and two didn't vote. Only one ruling coalition MP – Renáta Zmajkovičová (Smer) – endorsed the proposal, while an overwhelming majority voted against. Most opposition legislators voted in favour of the proposal.
Ján K. is alleged to have used violence in an attempt to recover a debt. According to the Pravda daily, the MP and another man locked the debtor in a garage and physically assaulted him. The incident is alleged to have taken place before Ján K. was elected to parliament. The Parliamentary Mandate and Immunity Committee, at a session on October 28, had also rejected a request by the General Prosecutor’s Office to allow Ján K. to be prosecuted.
