Smer receives warning from European socialists

MEMBERS of the European Socialists Party have expressed concerned over the SNS being included in the new coalition government.

In a letter sent to Smer Chairman Robert Fico, the head of the European socialists, Poul Rasmussen, demanded an explanation:

"The make-up of the ruling coalition provokes many fears in regards to protecting human rights, especially those of minorities, as well as to protecting the commitments towards democracy, the EU, and European values and policies," the letter reads.

Czech political analyst Jiří Pehe, who heads New York University in Prague, believes former PM Vladimír Mečiar's membership in the coalition, as well as several anti-American statements Fico has made recently, means the country's leaders won't be invited to the White House any time soon.

"With regards to the US, Slovakia will be isolated," he said.
