Slovak MPs will continue to be able to have several public positions simultaneously including serving as mayors, regional governors or heads of state institutions.
The ruling Smer party with its parliamentary majority did not pass the amendment to the constitutional law which would ban it. The draft amendment was proposed by the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party.
“The accumulation of functions opens the chance for getting unjustified advantages for the subject managed [by the MP/public official], and this situation makes Slovak MPs be in permanent conflict of interests during various votes – especially when it comes to state budget and taxes, but for example also when voting on laws stipulating due public institutions – where an advantage benefitting a certain municipality, self-governing region or a public institution can be to the detriment of other such bodies, or even the society as a whole,” SaS MPs argued, as quoted by the SITA newswire.
