FOLLOWING a meeting of the party's top board to be held late this afternoon, Smer should announce which parties it is considering as potential coalition partners, SITA wrote.
Smer chairman Robert Fico met with the heads of the Slovak National Party (SNS) and Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) yesterday, who agreed he should have the exclusive right to inform the public of the board’s decision.
Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) leader Béla Bugár confirmed he had also met with Smer, but would not comment on what was discussed. He did, however, reveal that the SMK had dropped its condition that the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) be among its coalition partners.
"It is naturally better for us to be part of the government with the KDH. But if [the KDH] hesitates too long, we have to consider the repercussions of allowing a government that would be disadvantageous for us to be formed," Bugár told Rádio Express.
The SMK refusing to form a coalition with Smer would clear the way for a Smer-SNS-HZDS government, which has been dubbed the "worst possible" scenario by a wide range of domestic and international observers.
