Slovakia’s ethnic Hungarian SMK party wants to point out its own mistakes from the past in the lead-up campaign to the local elections in Nitra Region scheduled for November, the chairman of the SMK deputy caucus in the regional parliament, László Forró, told the SITA newswire on July 28.
The SMK leader says the party does not want to address only ethnic Hungarian voters, but also Slovak voters. “We analyzed these (our mistakes in the county) during the second term, and we saw what we did wrong, so there is a need to fix this all, draw a lesson from it and prepare for the third term,” said Forro.
The SMK ruled in the Nitra Region in the first term after public administration reform as part of the previous centre-right government. There were several SMK scandals including a controversial attempt to transform social-services facilities, which were to be shifted to the administration of five non-profit organisations. The organisations featured names of 19 deputies of the Nitra County parliament. Finally, the facilities remained under administration of the county.
