Despite the SMK decision, however, political analysts agreed that the strongest candidates remain Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) chairman Vladimír Mečiar, incumbent President Rudolf Schuster, and ex-HZDS member Ivan Gašparovič.

According to the most recent survey carried out by the MVK agency, Kukan leads in popularity with 26.3 percent support, followed by Mečiar, who scored 21.5 percent in the February poll. Schuster shares the third rank with Gašparovič; both scored 15.7 percent. Mikloško was fifth with 6.9 percent.
