THE OPPOSITION Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), which will hold a national congress at the end of March, plans to change its statutes to cancel the post of deputy chairman.

At the moment, this post belongs to the controversial (nationalist) SMK politician Miklós Duray.

Duray, however, does not plan to withdraw from the SMK ranks, and says that the proposal to cancel his post is “just one of many such proposals”.

During the congress, elections for the post of party chairman should also take place. So far, only current SMK leader Béla Bugár is in the running for the post.

The SMK also plans to increase the accountability of regional politicians for whom they nominate to serve as mayors or local councilors.
