The ethnic Hungarian SMK party is planning to call a protest meeting aimed against an amendment to the State Language Act, with the rally likely to take place on September 1 in Dunajská Streda, SMK leader Pál Csáky told TASR on July 29. He added that the event is being backed by Hungarian NGOs that are active in Slovakia.
“We've decided to call it on this very day because that's when the amendment to the language act will come into effect, and on the same day Slovakia's Constitution Day is celebrated,” said the SMK chairman.
A number of political addresses should be delivered at the gathering, complemented by a cultural programme. SMK will also continue to undertake political activities at the international level, most notably at the European Parliament and the Council of Europe.
Csáky noted that SMK is also going ahead with its initiative to file a petition against the Act with Slovakia's Constitutional Court. In order to turn to the court, signatures of 30 MPs are needed. He said that a first version of the petition is ready, but the party won't approach fellow opposition parties SDKÚ and KDH until a final version is available. TASR
